First impressions: 2010 Lotus Evora

2010 Lotus Evora Wheel

I'm just back from my first drive of the Lotus Evora, and I'm at a bit of a loss for words. Driving this car has shaken my world. On the one hand, I'm really pleased that Lotus invited me along to the press junket. On the other hand, I now hate everyone at Lotus for giving me just a little taste and then yanking it away. After a day with the Evora, I'm starting to sympathize with crack addicts.

I'm relatively new to the world of Lotus; I've driven the Elise, but never on demanding roads like those found on our press junket. So I was truly taken aback by the Evora's race-car-like grip and organic steering feel. I've driven some pretty grippy cars before, but most derived their skills from all-wheel-drive and copious quantities of electronics. The Evora feels nothing like that. It's just you, the rubber and the road. The Evora isn't blindingly fast -- 0-60 in just under 5 seconds, which is quick, but not that quick -- but the grip and the balance are just awe inspiring. Head into a corner as quick as you please, and the Evora grabs pavement as if you were turning out of your driveway. (My co-driver said "You don't have the nads to corner as fast as you can in this car. Neither do I. Neither does anyone.") Fly 'round the bend, nail the throttle, let the tail step out a bit, countersteer, and away you go. The feeling is incredible -- true car-fan bliss. A few sharp bends and I felt like I was cheating on my wife.

Bear in mind that this is the big, heavy Lotus. It weighs 3,000 lbs, which by Lotus standards is as much as a planet. It has an excessively big six-cylinder engine. And it has such unheard-of creature comforts as a navigation system and (gasp!) cruise control. (Although I was comforted by the fact that my test car's air conditioning didn't work. Clearly, tradition soldiers on in Britain.) Even so, it's still a Lotus through-and-through, and the driving experience is like nothing else -- at least, nothing else that's street-legal. Mid-way through our drive, I hopped behind the wheel of a BMW 325i wagon that a friend was using as a camera car, and I felt like I was driving an Olds Delta 88.

 2010 Lotus Evora Profile View
Toyota's DOHC 3.5-liter 2GR-FE VVT-I V-6, good for 276 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, marks a step up from the Elise's VVTL-I four, also supplied by Toyota. It helps this car, which is longer, wider and almost 900 pounds heavier than the hyper-focused Elise, reach 60 mph in just under 5 seconds, and a top speed of 162 mph, while delivering over 30 mpg on the highway. Though six-speed manual transmissions, also sourced from Toyota, are standard, with a sport-ratio option present on the cars we drove, an automatic gearbox will become available with the 2011 model year.
